Among the recent investigations and allegations, Hope Hicks has officially resigned from any duties at the White House. Many are skeptical about this decision due to the timing but she claims it is because she wishes to pursue other opportunities. She has been a longtime Trump partner and was with him before the election. Is the timing a coincidence, Jennifer Rubin doesn't seem to believe so.
This article was a summary of the recent Hope Hicks event. Rubin reported this article soon after the event happened and it was mostly opinionated. She uses a skeptical diction as she questions the timing of Hicks decision. She uses statements like, "the timing is curious," to show her questioning and to try to influence the readers that it is suspicious for her to leave at this time. She writes in a suspicious tone as she says things such as, "Might this have been an effort to draw attention away from that fiasco?" referring to the recent investigations and Trumps actions. I believe the purpose of this article was to sway people into becoming very suspicious about her resigning. There is no true benefit for writing this except for clicks as it will attract many readers because of the events popularity. Rubin expresses bias in the article as it is clear to see that she doesn't believe Hicks reasons for leaving, but do you?

1/31/2018 FBI Officials Knew of New Clinton Emails Before Alerting Congress - Del Quintin Wilber & Aruna ViswanathaRead Now It has now come to attention that FBI officials were aware of new emails regarding Hillary Clinton for a month before addressing them to Congress. These emails were discovered near the end of the Clinton's presidential campaign and were not released in order to keep voting fair. Although these emails would not have "changed the Federal Bureau of Investigation's decision that Mrs. Clinton had committed no prosecutable offences. After this news was discovered, Mr. McCabe (in charge of the investigation) stepped down. Holding the emails was very questionable and McCabe would not comment on the reason he stepped down or about the investigation. It is thought that they were held so Mrs. Clinton's election was not affected, but that has not been confirmed.
The authors use very formal diction and don't show much emotional connection. They used words like "lag" to keep the formality and a dull tone. This is key for this topic and it is a serious matter and she be dealt with straightforward. The authors don't use many rhetorical devices as the topic is best described if they give facts and quotes instead. They wrote this article to inform the general public of the new details in the Clinton email situation. Many are still left confused on the situation but this article clears up some of the confusion. This topic is still very hot, by writing this they may get more clicks and people reading which will make them more money. This doesn't however influence any bias into the details as a majority of the information is statistics and quotes. They do a great job writing this and handled the situation very well. 12/20/2017 How the ‘Small-Business Tax Cut’Would Also Be a Tax Cut for the Wealthy - Alicia ParlapianoRead NowA recent law created by Republican law makers has come into effect. This tax bill includes a large tax cut. This cut is a 20% cut on pass through income. This is a big victory for the Republican party as it is the first Republican bill passed while President Trump in office. Although this tax cut was focused for small businesses, many believe it will also benefit large businesses. According to Parlapiano, "Pass-through income is business income that is taxed once at the individual rates of the business owner." This would apply to people such as, IT Specialists, Painters, Pizza Shop Owners, and Real Estate Investors. The issue is that 69% of pass through income goes to the top 1% of all people.
Parlapiano uses a formal diction to provide needed information as well as a strong appeal to logos. She incorporates facts and statistics throughout to keep the article as unbiased as possible. It is evident that she is not emotionally involved as she leaves interpretation for weather the bill is good or bad up to the reader. The author uses a straightforward tone to give the readers only facts with no bias. She gives a variety of facts which creates an appeal to logos throughout the piece. She chose this to give an honest report of the new bill. Many stores like Wal-Mart now give out deals and coupons to those who wait in line for the doors to open for black Friday. These incentives are not enough as black Friday participation is down 4% from last year while online shopping is up 18% , this trend has been noticeable in recent years and does not seem to be changing anytime soon. The in store industry should not fear however, as in store shopping still accounts for 90% of the countries shopping.
Nassauer and Laura use a formal diction to help get the point and facts across that online shopping is taking over black Friday and is regular shopping as well. They use statistics as evidence and personal quotes from shoppers and workers at online warehouses. This diction helps add to the impartial tone as they are able to address the pros and cons of both industries yet. The authors are impartial yet they show some worry for the in store shopping industry. This tone shows that they believe that online shopping has a bright future yet do not count in store shopping out of the picture, they still acknowledge that in store shopping is king at the moment. The two authors are able to use few rhetorical devices to strengthen their arguments. They use personification by stating that Amazon has put Holiday shopping in a "Frenzy." This shows how powerful Amazon online shopping has become. They don't use many rhetorical devices in this article although it would help their argument. The purpose of this article is to inform people about the current trends in shopping. Their is no benefit for them to right this besides being able to inform others. That is the main goal of this article is to let the average shopper know what is currently happening in the shopping world. The goal is to inform. Isis is on the verge of a serious downfall as less people are supporting them and they are losing land quickly. Ever since Turkey secured its boarders, less extremists are able to access Syria. This is causing a drop in support for the country. It has also led to a lost of land. Isis needs the land to thrive as without it, they cannot make money or draw in supporters. Although Isis is falling, many predict that they will soon reemerge as a powerful force unless action is taken while they are down.
As seen in a majority of the Wall Street Journal's articles, the author uses a formal diction to put their point across. This is a great choice as the topic should not be taken lightly and this diction shows that. Although I do not believe that the author is attached to the topic, she uses words such as, lucrative and caliphate to create a serious tone. She uses personification to show how people once thought Isis would not be stopped, describing it as "Invincible" and how to describe how they have been harmed saying they took a "massive blow." The author is using this to descibe just how big the potential downfall would be 9/30/2017 Tillerson, In Rare High-Level Acknowledgement, Says U.S. Is in Direct Contact With North Korea - Charles HutzlerRead Now We all know that the United States and North Korea are in bad terms and that things could go bad at any moment, but what we don't know is what is being done to resolve the issue between the two countries. This article covers this issue. Hutzler covers Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's recent comments on the communication with North Korea. According to Hutzler we are in contact with North Korea and are working to solve the tension. It is not as bad as most think, "We have lines of communication to Pyongyang. We're not in a dark zone." The article describes the current condition of the relationship between the United States and North Korea.
Hutzler uses a very formal diction throughout the article. He incorporates very deliberate words which shows that he is very serious towards the topic. It appears that Hutzler is very relived that someone that high in the government has released confirmation that the governments are communicating. The author states that a "high level" official saying this is "rare." Although he is not very attached as he is not a government official but he is more attached than the average citizen as he was able to receive the information before the public. The author is straight forward and he uses sophisticated words which express a dry tone. He lacks descriptive words as well as being very formal which makes me see the tone as dry, which is acceptable for an article on this topic. Hutzler does not incorporate many rhetorical devices in this article. Although there is not an abundance of these devices, the author uses a hyperbole to describe the that the upcoming summit with President Xi and President Trump is "the most important event" in the relationship between the United States and China. He wants to insure the reader that this will be a very important meeting that could change the United states ties with China forever. By influencing the reader that this is important, the readers will view the entire article as a more meaningful piece. Hutzler also personifies Mr. Tillerson's words to make them seem more significant. He states that many are upset whether his words carry weight with President Trump." The audience will realize that Tillerson's words are very relevant because people are hoping Trump will be influenced by them. He wants the topic he is covering to appear very relevant. The tone of this article is dry. The article is very bare bones and does not include many rhetorical devices. He includes many quotes and facts to make his point and tone very straight foward. He feels that by keeping unnecessary information out, it will decrease the amount of bias that may give false information. It is important that he does this because he wants the public to get the correct information. Hutzler does not feel very emotional connected, therefore he wants to show the people of whats going on in the government. The authors purpose is to inform the general public that the United States is working to fix the relationship between them and North Korea. He also wants to inform the readers that a high official confirmed that the countries are communicating. This is obvious to see as he uses quotes throughout and incorporates them in a majority of his sentences . This makes the readers aware that he is trying to give an unbiased analysis of Tiillerson's statements. By creating this sort of credibility, the readers will trust the article and will also read future articles by the author. |
